That Joey.....always saying something that makes me wish for an invisibility cloak.
This morning when I parked the van, the kids and I noticed someone shoveling the sidewalk. I mentioned to the kids that he would appreciate it if we told him, 'Thanks for shoveling the sidewalk' when we walked by him. I talked with the kids about how it's nice of him to clean off the sidewalk so it's safe for us to walk into the building.
Anyway, we gather the backpacks, put on coats, and head out. As we pass the guy Joey said, 'Thanks guy." The guy stops and smiles and said, "You're welcome." Then Joey said, "I didn't say thanks guy, I said thanks God. I love this snow." And then I wished I could become invisible. The End.

Our school just held parent teacher conferences. During the conferences I learned that Joey is reading on a level G/H. The teacher explained that he's really strong on a level G but not quite ready for level H. She said that while he can read level H he's just not really as fluid as she would like him to be to be considered a level H. The kindergarteners are only expected on a level E by the end of the year. Common Core Standards changed up a few things, including where the children are supposed to be reading by the end of the year. When Isabella was in kindergarten, she was only expected to be on a level C. And that's where she was.
Isabella is somewhere near a level T/U but the teacher didn't say that. She just said that Isabella was reading where they want the kids to be at the end of third grade and the start of fourth grade. Which according to the A-Z reading chart, that's where she probably is reading.
Which also reminds me that Isabella told me that they have a Harry Potter book in the classroom and she had to stop reading the book she had at her desk because there was some pretty scary stuff in the book and she was afraid it would give her nightmares.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One thing kinda upset me just a little. All year long Isabella has made a 100% on every spelling test with the exception of one word back in January*. The word was one of the 'bonus/application' words which isn't one of the words she studied. It's an extra word. The kids have to use the pattern of the week and apply it to the 'new' word that is given. Well, something happened and my wonderful speller missed one application word. Because she missed that ONE word, her grade dropped down from a 4 to a 3. ONE word caused her to get a lower grade on her report card and I don't think that is fair. Anyway, when I asked the teacher about why she received a 3 in spelling, instead of a 4 (I forgot about the one word she had missed) the teacher explained about the one word that Isabella had missed and Isabella said, "Yeah and I even remember the word I missed." She said the word and then she spelled it correctly. OH MY WORD! That is my child**.
Other than the hard work my children put into their education the one thing that impressed me the most and made me the most proud was when Isabella's teacher said to me, 'I really wanted to share with you that Isabella is one of the most polite children in the class. She always says please and thank you when she wants something and when she's trying to get my attention she says, "Excuse me" and then waits for me to respond to her.'
I was also told about how Joey is always in such a great mood and is one of the students who is always doing the right thing. Another teacher stopped me in the hall and said something like, 'Your Joey is just great! We could all use a page from his book'. Which I think meant that he's a great child with an amazing perspective on life and there should be more people like him.
*While Isabella remembers the word she missed, I do not. She's not here for me to ask so it's just a vacant place in my brain.
** I was in a Spelling Bee when I was in the first grade. I was competing against 1-3 graders. I was given the word 'once'. I asked for a definition and for them to use the word in a sentence. And then I spelled, "w-a-n-t-s". I came in 4th place and was very jealous of the girls who won trophies. Then again, I was in a spelling bee in the 7th grade? I was competing against 6-8 grade. The word I misspelled was knuckle. I left off the silent 'k'
I think you should be tremendously proud of how polite your kids are. We work hard to raise our kids to be polite because it seems to be missing in a lot of kids and we always notice it when other kids are polite. It sounds like your two are some good little ones.
ReplyDeleteGood manners matter still so good for you in raising polite children. I loved spelling and spelling bees, that nervous excited feeling in my stomach. Course I'm sure some kids dreaded them, but they were the ones who got excited about chin ups in gym class. : )
ReplyDeleteHave a nice weekend!
Yea for good manners. So many times you don't hear that from children.
ReplyDeleteKids learn manners from home. I have quite a few kids in my daycare that need to be taught manners because they are not learning them at home. You should be very proud of yourself and your children!
ReplyDeleteThat's too funny he was thanking God for the snow rather than thanking the guy for shoveling the snow. Yep, I would have been wishing for an invisibility cloak, too. ;)
ReplyDeleteThat's a bummer Isabella's grade dropped a whole point because of ONE word. Crazy.
You are obviously doing a stellar job with your kids - 'please' and 'thank you' go a LONG way. :)
Another Winter Storm Dud and some Funnies
I am terrible at spelling :-( but really, dropping a grade over one word? Tough educational track. I may have to share that with my kids so they appreciate their teacher ;-)
ReplyDeleteI don't spell well. Do you think Joey was teasing the guy? Maybe he was shock by a reply and didn't know what to say next? funny
ReplyDeleteJoey sounds hilarious!
ReplyDeleteOh Joey, Joey, Joey!
ReplyDeleteHehehehe
